Does your application database need a public port? Map the access path first

Identify local, private-network and remote administrative database access before configuring listeners, firewall rules and accounts.

An application database does not automatically need unrestricted public access. Start by mapping which process needs to connect from which machine. The application path and occasional administrative access may require different arrangements.

Draw the connection path

List the application host, database host and any administrator workstation. If the application and database share a machine, a local connection may be suitable. If they are on separate machines, investigate the private networking and access controls available in the actual environment.

Container networks and local hostnames need particular care: localhost inside a container refers to that container. Record the endpoint as seen by the application, not just the address used by your own database tool.

Configure each layer intentionally

Database listener settings, network rules and database accounts serve different roles. A listener on the desired address does not by itself authorise an account, and a valid password does not guarantee the network route is permitted. Follow the documentation for the installed engine and deployment model.

  • Limit network access to the sources that actually need it.
  • Give the application an account appropriate to its operations.
  • Separate routine application access from schema administration.
  • Use the engine's supported encrypted connection settings where required.
  • Plan temporary support access and remove it when the task is complete.

Verify from the application environment

Test the expected connection from the application host and confirm a representative operation. Also confirm that unintended paths are not available under the intended policy. Avoid exposing private data or credentials in a public connection-test endpoint.

If a managed database or shared service supplies a prescribed endpoint, use its supported access method rather than editing infrastructure outside your control. For a VPS deployment, include this network map in the support brief so database setup and application configuration can be considered together.
