An application that calls an external AI API has two different environments to consider: your web application and the provider running the model. Its VPS requirements come from the work your application performs, the data it stores and the concurrency it handles.
Separate API calls from local model execution
Calling a hosted API does not by itself mean your server must run a model locally. A self-hosted model is a different deployment with its own hardware, software and licensing requirements. State which design your project uses before discussing resources or AI environment setup.
For an API-based application, list the web runtime, database, uploads, streaming behavior and any background workers. Record provider account requirements and usage limits as external dependencies that need to be managed alongside hosting.
Prepare the request lifecycle
- Keep private API credentials on the server side.
- Define user authentication and limits appropriate to the application.
- Decide how long requests, streaming and cancellation are handled.
- Queue long-running work when the design requires it.
- Record useful errors without storing sensitive prompts or outputs unnecessarily.
A timeout or provider rejection should produce a usable application response. Test the error path as well as a successful call. Repeated retries can have operational and usage-cost consequences, so use the provider's supported guidance for the selected API.
Size the application and define support work
Measure the application's own memory, CPU, storage and overlapping requests. Include document processing or other local computation, which can be more demanding than forwarding a short API request. Keep the external provider's usage charges separate from server costs.
